This historic place of worship was founded in July 1897 by white businessmen who
needed a place for their Black employees to go, as no white churches would
permit them to attend. It still stands at the original location of 80 Legion Parkway, off of Pleasant Street. The church has served as much more than a religious center–it’s legacy includes being a community center where political debates, voter registration, food drives, Black History Month or Kwanzaa events, and many other community meetings take place. Messiah Baptist is also the only church in the city of champions with its own credit union–thus having the additional significance of supporting members’ financial education and empowerment.
Date: 1897 to Present
