The name Mary Baker is synonymous with Black history in Brockton. Mrs. Baker is known to be the first African-American to hold a position at City Hall. She was a fierce advocate for affordable housing in our city, co-founding two affordable housing complexes, as well as fighting for school integration. She worked for fourteen years at Massasoit Community College, where she was the first “minority outreach coordinator.” A Brockton elementary school was named in her honor —the first for an African-American in the city—in 2008.
