On this street, you will find the last remaining piece of the famous Brockton Liberty Tree, and the community gardens of the Frederick Douglass Neighborhood Association. The street (originally “High Street”) was renamed in Frederick Douglass’s honor in 2004, at the time when the original Liberty Tree was removed by the city. A beautiful mural, depicting Frederick Douglass, decorates the side of the historic Brockton Grayson Hotel. Douglass was an escaped slave, abolitionist, suffragist, journalist and statesman. He can also be credited with being the founder of the Civil Rights Movement in America.
Douglass’s great-grandson, Frederick Douglass IV, attended the ceremony, along with his wife, dressed as Anna Douglass. The street intersects with Brockton’s Main Street and Warren Avenue.
